SimCity game now free?

Update 18 Oct 2020: The online SimCity game on the official EA Games has been taken down. Instead, you can play the free-to-play mobile version called SimCity BuildIt, available on Google Play, Apple Store and Amazon. Old blog post follows.

I couldn’t believe it at first, but it’s true! Yeah, I know it’s an old game, but it’s still a simulation game, and I love simulation games! Anyhoo, I was on the lookout for more free downloadable games by Bullfrog when I stumbled onto Electronic Arts’ SimCity web site, and apparently they are letting us play the online version of SimCity Classic for free (link removed, page no longer exist) (they call it SimCity Live). The site was nice enough to include a quick start guide (link removed, page no longer exist) and in-depth instructions (link removed, page no longer exist) on how to play the game, just in case your SimCity skills are rusty.

Like any other good web sites, you will have to register first and get your e-mail account verified before you can access the game. The registration was quick and easy, and I didn’t have to give out personal information other than my full name and my e-mail address. The game itself was fast to load (at least on my computer), and a cool feature is that you can save your game! Another interesting thing is that there is a section within the SimCity site, called Waterski Challenge, which you can also play through your browser. I’ll be trying that one out later.

One bummer though, you can only use Internet Explorer to play it, so for us Mozilla-based browser lovers like Netscape Navigator and Firefox, we’ll have to give in to IE if you so desperately need to play this game.

Spread the love

This has actually been around for quite a while. One of my coworkers and I got hooked on it a while ago and were passing saved games back and forth.
One little tip: I’m pretty sure you can use some of the old save game editors to give yourself some extra cash πŸ˜‰

Oooh, very nice tip, thanks Kate!

This is dangerous – I cannot start on this because I know I will get hooked! Oh good thing it’s only for IE, good excuse

Heheh, we are so old-school πŸ˜€

  3. Ian says:

Cool. I still like Sim City, but haven’t played it for a while.

  4. Fare Soldi says:

Be very careful, once my girlfriend was out for one week and I did not sleep the entire week playing SimCity.
    I was like a SimCity-holic!

    It is very addictive.

  5. again, one good info from you.. πŸ™‚
my favourite games type is strategy & simulation game, like this one.
agree with Fare Soldi, this kind of game is really addicted

  6. SimCity online and free! I don’t know about this – seems like a great way to take up more of my time. My dog ate our last SimCity game so I haven’t played in a little over a year. I’ll have to give this game a try and let’s hope that the Internet is save from the dog.

How can I get extra cash?
