In case you have to do it manually like I have to on a few of my IIS web servers, but you’re not sure how to do so, here’s how (from WordPress.org).

  1. Download the latest WordPress zip (or tar.gz) file from http://wordpress.org/download.
  2. Unpack the zip file that you downloaded.
  3. Using an FTP client, upload the new wp-includes and wp-admin directories to your website, overwriting old files.
  4. Upload the individual files from the new wp-content directory to the existing wp-content directory in your website, overwriting existing files. Do NOT delete your existing wp-content directory. Do NOT delete any files or directories in your existing wp-content directory (except for the one being overwritten by new files).
  5. Upload all new loose files from the root directory of the new version to your website root directory.
  6. Using a web browser, go to http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin. You may be asked to log in.If so, enter your WordPress login information, then click Log In.
  7. If a database upgrade is necessary at this point, WordPress will detect it and give you a link to http://www.yourdomain.com/wp-admin/upgrade.php. Follow that link and follow the instructions. This will update your database to be compatible with the latest code.
  8. In the WordPress dashboard, select Settings >> Permalinks.
  9. Click Save Changes.

These are the exact steps I used in the user manual I gave to my customers who unfortunately had to do so because they’re hosted in a very strict Windows-based network running on Microsoft’s Internet Information Server.
