5 ways to make an impact as a new employee

From Through the Eyes of a Recruiter, it basically highlights the following:

  1. Listen more than you talk.
  2. Network up and down your organization.
  3. Be a problem solver.
  4. Seek feedback.
  5. Don’t curb your enthusiasm.

I’d like to think that I practice all five of them whenever I’m in a new working environment. I’m especially fond of using tactic number 2, where I would even chat up with the cleaning ladies. Oh, the gossips and news you get from them can be really amazing. Not that I’m such a gossip monger or anything, but the info you get from them concerning what’s going on in a company can be dizzyingly accurate. It helps me at least to be alert and take action before any of my colleague would, and takes away the surprise element on any news I get after.

  1. Networking is ridiculously important. You can never know who will give you an important tip. It’s good to be friends with everyone you can.

  2. And by be a problem solver that I believe should mean you actually solve the problems and show how to change to avoid them in the future. Different people have different skills. Networking is a good thing to try to do but some people take to that more naturally. So try to do all of them but also go deeply in those you have the ability to do so.

  3. Nice tips – I always find success by finding out what the best employees do and learning from them. If you can figure out how to outperform the allstar you’re on your way up.

  4. I agree that #2 may be the most important. Read about good diplomats and spy’s ….it’s all about the networking, baby.

  6. Sure, it is easy for you to start a chat with the cleaning lady. But what am I supposed to say, if I’m a guy? she may have a husband, and if she thinks I’m trying to hit on her..maybe I’ll get my ass kicked by her man the next day. 😛

    All in all, it is always a good thing to listen more than you speak…and stay low, at least in the beginning.
