WordPress as a CMS: The usefulness of Pages

Tuesday, August 7th, 2007

I never realized how useful the Pages function is in WordPress until I started developing my client’s web site recently with WordPress as its content management system (will post full URL of client soon). Pages is noticeably more useful as of WordPress 2.2 due to its now built-in ability to add unlimited levels of sub-pages to it. From the Pages documentation I get at WordPress Codex, I use pages to develop my main and sub-menus, instead of posts; this reflected very well with the Products section for my client’s web site, which was quite extensive. Posts are useful for news and events section, but aren’t necessarily effective as static page; I will leave this explanation for another day.

Other than the brief findings I’ve done on WordPress’ potential as a CMS, I’ve also been looking into ways to take WordPress further into becoming a project management system. Fortunately I came across a post by Danny Ayers, giving an overview of how, with clever manipulations on categories, WordPress can be built to become a pretty decent PMS. (warning: at the time of this posting, the site is completely empty, so you might want to read the cached version in Google instead.) I will give WordPress a try when I get into PMS development later.

This is meant to be a short post, but I just wanted to express how impressed I am of WordPress’ flexibility to go beyond just being a blogging platform. WordPress rawks!

WebGrrrl.net: Shifting focus

Friday, August 3rd, 2007

WebGrrrl.net RefocusedOver the week, I’ve been pondering the fate that is WebGrrrl.net. To be honest, even with the seemingly lack of updates (seemingly, because I’m ignoring my paid posts), I actually have a lot of things in my mind I’d like to blog about. However, the topics I wanted to blog on doesn’t really fit into what I initially envisioned WebGrrrl.net to be, which was… umm, I wasn’t really sure what it was. I never really had a vision for WebGrrrl.net, but I know I wasn’t going to post on anything too personal, or too commercial, or short posts on what I found through my daily bloghoppings.

At first, I thought of refocusing the objective of WebGrrrl.net to topics concerning blogging and WordPress development; I would then create a new blog focusing on interesting doodads I found on the Web, and another blog on Web programming matters. Nah. I finally decided on creating just one more blog for my Web programming stuff called Coding Idiot, which will be launched next week. I may want to look for volunteers to contribute a post every fortnight, with some link love as exchange. Once things are really rolling, I plan to start paying bloggers who contribute to Coding Idiot. I’ll write up some more details in the new blog pretty soon.

As for my doodads idea, I may just dump them back here, because I’m sure others will find them fun as well.

So there. Cheers!

Top Commentators Widget v.0.999

Download Top Commentators Widget v.0.999.

Only one fix has been done to the widget, but this fix is a very big deal to all who are looking forward to using. That fix is the missing closing tag at the end of the code; in widget words, it’s the $after_widget placement.

I’m still not sure how to go about the one or two comments I got about the widget control form not displaying properly, and that’s too bad. I do appreciate it if anyone knows any fix to that; I did my best to copy the widget codes provided by default by Automattic.

Comments, bugs, suggestion — please comment under the original Top Commentators Widget post.
